Rule of law the Nigerian style
For any follower of Nigerian politics, what one hears that is associated with the present administration is the much touted rule of law, what ever that means. My assumption is, like in any developed country "Rule of Law" should the respect of the constitution and judgements of the courts untill a higher court of competent jurisdiction either affairms or over turns the present ruling. When this administration came to power one of the few visible things the president did was to send the then governor of River State packing as soon as the supreme court ruled that Amechi was the duely elected governor. Most of us hailed that action. In Nigeria and indeed the world over, justice delayed is justice denied. It has been over year since the ill feted elections were allegedly conducted. Most of the electoral tribunals dispatched their responsibilities with the hast and compitency it deserved. Others have since been dragging their feet. Millions of naira have changed hands according to published reports and ofcourse the highest bidder buys the result. This can only be expected given the caliber of politicans we have who will stop at nothing to be declared a winner. This brings me to Imo state and the Imo State House of Assembly where the people's house has been turned into a house of ill repute. Where the Speaker in cohoots with some godfathers who do nothing but course mischief have declared themselves above the law. In july the appeals court which is the court of last resort in electoral matters concerning the states ruled that the APGA candidate from the Ahiazu East constituency was the duely elected member of the state house of assembly. The Speaker has since refused to swear in this honorable gentleman in the pretence that he has another court other from a federal judge in kastina state who is now in Oweeri to stay the judgement of an appeals court. The same Judge has done the same thing with a PDP candidate from Orlu who was duely given a certificate of election by the INEC after a rerun election ordered by the court. Instead he has allowed these two imposters to draw salaries from the public funds samelessly. Remember that this present dispensation is hinged on the run of law or so they claim. We have all come to expect that most cases in Nigeria are not won or lost on the facts and merit but on the dept of your purse. This commentator is dumb founded as to why both the federal and state governments have not intervened. Is this simalar to the issue of the dethrowned traditional ruler of Isiala Mbano which was ordered by the state government and stopped a by court of compitent jurisdiction yet the governemnt ignored the ruling of the court. In my previous piece I crdited Imo state government as being first in a lot of things, now you can add this to that list as it keeps growing. "Hundered days is for the thief and one day for the owner of the house".
