What is the actual population of Nigeria?

Many Nigerians can not say with certainty how many people occupy that geographic mass we call home. The worst part of it is that the government it self has no clue the number of citizens its supposed to carter for. No wonder nothing works, the government can not make accurate economic forecast for any type of developmental or infrastructural network. To be able to determine what goes where and who gets what a government should have in its data base so indicators of national and international trends that can point to a specific problem or correction.

That brings me to the issue of the forth coming general elections and the reason why Nigeria can not get it right. How can INEC have an accurate voter's registration when it does not know how many people that lives in a word, senatorial zone or even state? Is there any wonder why every election is rigged? If you do not have an accurate head count of eligible voters and the number that do the actual voting how can you then determine who has won an election? The federal government recently approved the sum of #87 billion Naira for the voter's registration and yet we do not have an accurate census figures. Should,nt the government be asking the UN for help in this regard so as to tell us how many we are as we do not seem to know how to count by our selves with out each region trying to out cheat the other.

My humble opinion is that until we have an accurate census figure, all we are doing in terms of elections and every thing that affects the lives of every day Nigerian is a waste of time and resources. The politicians all know this and do not wanna do any thing about it. It is a shame that we keep deceiving ourselves.
