Nigeria : One step forward, two steps backwards

It is ashonishing that the presidency rushed to close down a TV station simplely because the station reported a story about an alledged resignation by the president. I thought the president believed in the rule of law. Does it mean that Nigeria can never join the community of civilized nations? Can we ever get any thing right? There is a process to handle deformation of character or slander ... the court. Is there any reason why the governemnt could not have gone through the judicial system to make its case? The government should do a rethink and as a matter of urgency restore the station to full health. Did the president ever think of the economic impact his action would have on the hundreds of employees of that news outlet? What bothers me is that I have not seen any outrage from the civil rights groups, the NUJ, National Association of Nigeria Students and others. This flawed decision of the federal governemnt should not be left to stand. We have not come this far to turn around because some one's ego was bruised. It does not matter what the crime of the station is, let justice take its course. The presidency should not be the judge and jury. I am sure a segment of the ruling party will see the evil hands of the opposition in this drama. The only way we can find out the truth is by going to court and having the station explain its action, any thing short of that is unacceptable. One school of thought believes that this whole saga was planned and excuted by the presidency in other to deflate attention from the running opra of the presidents health. This writer has no indipendent confirmation of this but given what we have witnessed in the last month or so, any thing is possible. May I ask, is there any reason why the president has refused to address the nation or answer any questions about his health? Nigerians have the right to know that their leader is fit to pilot the ship of state. Is that too much to ask? The president can shut down all the news stations in the country but untill he comes clean and levels with the Nigerian people all these rumors will persist. Using a failed and tired style of bullying the press will not work, it did notwork with the military who ruled with guns so why does the president think he can get away with it at this day and age? All Nigerians home and abroad should stand up and defeat this tyranny and let this administration know it can not set back the hands of the clock. We are too smart a people to know when we are being taken for a ride. If the president is serious and sincere let him disclose to Nigerians the true state of his health instead of chasing shadows.
